The foreshadowing in Awakening was also genius.
I love this man’s character arc and him. I do love DA2 Anderps.
My mom and I just call him Anderpants.
ANDERPANTS BAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHA *DEAD*
Also I just imagined Anders frolicking through the woods asking whether people could paint with all the colours of the wind and it made me laugh harder.
Don’t tempt me.
Except he’d be painting with the colour of magic and that’s just a crossover that I’ve always wanted to happen.
I occasionally call him, Anderps. I feel so uncreative now.
Also can’t unsee, frolicking Anders in nothing but a pair of trousers.
I am kinda sad that there isn’t a lot of Achilles and Connor in fandom, work or just talk. I just really love their father-son relationship, so much feels I have for them.
Your tags speak to me. I shall look forward to it.
Its not a robe. Its a coat. The other mages wear the robes.
Didn’t I see the clone of this with Isabela? I have suggestions for more confessions. “I hate Fenris because he doesn’t wear shoes. How practical is that in battle?”, ” I hate Aveline, she wears a headband. How practical is that in battle?” and “I hate Varric, he shows his chest hair. How practical is that in battle?”
You forgot to mention Merrill, she also doesn’t wear shoes and wears a dress (kinda). Sebastian who’s armor is too shiny (
I actually like the dude’s armor). Bethany wears a dress. Carver just wears plain clothes (I refer to act 1), where is your protection man? You’re a front liner, wear some armor.
Why restrict ourselves to just the party members? The Arishok wears little to no armor at all. Someone help me here. My headache prevents me from thinking of more impractical stuff.
I used to hunt in AC3 like the game taught me; using a combination of the bow and arrow, snares, bait, and pistols. Then I realized it’s much less of a headache to just ride a horse until you find one and then jump off of it to “air assassinate” prey with a hidden blade.
I am a
lazy superb hunter. :B
Maybe you’re just not following the right blogs? There are loads of us obsessive Anders lovers on Tumblr, it’s almost a sinister cult. Join usssss….
So we’re a cult now? I demand to know the benefits of this cult.
can i put a giant holiday bow on this confession?
fuck and yes
I would not be here had it not been for two.
I am an Anders ‘fangirl’, as it were.
I love Anders in ways that are probably annoying as fuck and unhealthy and possibly illegal in some jurisdictions.
He is an amazing character.
Terrible boyfriend material.
But when I pair him up with my Hawke, who is pretty equally bad partnership material, by the way, I’m not pairing him up with me, and I’m not shacking up with him IRL. I know we all enjoy taking comparisons between DA and RL social issues and many of them are completely valid but this particular one falls a bit flat.
Anders is hugely a product of his very specific social circumstances unique to Thedas and the situation and context in which the Dragon Age series is presented. He wouldn’t and can’t translate properly to the real modern world (which is actually why I have a really difficult time with most AUs concerning his character, something just feels ‘lost in translation’, most of the time), so comparing him to a real person in this particular way is a bit ridiculous.
Most of the characters in the games would be horrible partners if dumped completely as they are into the real world.
I don’t know why this even needs to be said.
Just to add my two cents, I agree with impressionate. Especially with the AU thing. If you want to compare Anders to someone in a modern setting (our time), you would need to overhaul him entirely because who he is, is shaped by his circumstance.
The earlier of these is the one many know of. Tell is there any religion or government law that demand we give up our children if they are born with something. A mutation perhaps. I don’t think we do. Even if Anders father still rejects him. We all know from the short story that his mother loved him. Which may lead to a divorce and sole custody over Anders. In which case Anders still has a loving parent.
What about his campaigning for mage rights. Well we don’t have mages. But we do have oppression. So he might be a terrible boyfriend because he keeps joining rallies, runs, and whatever else he can to campaign for equal right for people or less mistreatment of animals that he may get so caught up in them, he might forget he’s on a date and just start talking about them.
What about Justice? Well there is no Fade here nor Fade spirits and demons. So perhaps he has an accident that makes him bipolar-like. He still probably won’t be blowing up building since we have medicine and treatment, that Thedas does not have.
A modern Anders would not be exactly similar to Anders. They may still share certain things/traits/etc. He might still be clingy with father or abandonment issues, and difficult to deal with due to his mental condition (if he does have that accident). Same goes for any other character, Hawke and DAO characters included. (But I think I’ve already derailed this topic. Hopefully I got my point across, or it may have gotten lost due to my babbling.)
That would have been truly epic. It would have been nice to talk with Justice more as well.
I always though that Feynriel was dreaming about the Circle which is why we’re in the circle when we enter the Fade in DAII. But i may be wrong, since DAII did love reusing maps
Thats probably why they used it. Each door could have lead to a companion’s dream though. I can almost picture Isabela’s dream. LOL
Isabela sure would have some strong words to say against being rescued.
Her dream would be in the cabin of her ship with male and female “deckhands”. :)
And a Desire Demon or two :)
Haha, yeah I bet she would definite hate being rescued. I did like the bit with Duncun in the begin of Origin’s fade. I think they should have done something similar with Hawke. Like Hawke in Lothering with her/his family with Malcolm alive. (But absent, Leandra commenting that he’s out in the Market or something.)
Hawke like the warden (by player choice) can see through the illusion or just fail (Like I did with that one warden, or tried too. There should have been a game over scene). Hawke has to find the demon in her/his dream. Fight and win against it. Then head off to do the same for her/his companions. (except Anders)
But most of all I would have liked Justice!Anders to have played a larger role in it. Honestly I want to know more about their joining. (Bioware, why do you deny me the chance to poke him for information). If brought along, he’ll barge into Hawke’s fade dream and demand the demon face him and stuff. (Anders and Justice needs no rescuing. FU, demon. I lived here.)
Oh and they could have used this chance to show us more about Fenris’ past. Except he’d look like Leto. And his fade dream would have Varania and his mother in his little paradise sorta of dream. Merrill would be hailed by her people for finally repairing the mirror (and we could have learned a bit more about the dalish). A little domestic bliss with Wesley and Aveline? Y/Y.
Wait and Hawke’s LI’s dream would include Hawke. They’d refer to Hawke as their lover and what not. Except if it’s Anders in which case Justice and Anders tries to convince Hawke to believe them. (It would have been touching. And Hawke could chose not to believe and end up fighting Justice!Anders or believe and join forces to find and fight the demon).
And then… Hurr, I should stop here before I get carried away further. Like I already had.
Aveline always gave me the vibe that she’d only fall for someone who doesn’t have a traincar and a wheelbarrow of psychological problems or insecurities. Just wouldn’t find those types of men attractive.
Yeah, she’s a little bit “so-sensible-it-hurts” and that’s probably why she falls for Donnic. I mean, compared to everyone Hawke has Aveline associating with, it must be nice to go home to something “normal”.
Man, I can see the days when Aveline goes on ‘special assignment’ with Hawke and comes home covered in unidentifiable fluids.
Donnic: …Hard day?
Aveline: I tromped through miles of mining tunnel eviscerating dead people. And when I wasn’t eviscerating dead people - and spiders, of course—
Donnic: Of course. It wouldn’t be an outing with Hawke if there weren’t giant spiders.
Aveline: —I was listening to Fenris complain that Hawke, strong though she is, should not be friendly with Merrill because ‘the witch is a bad influence’. I honestly think he was hoping I’d turn her over to the Templars. …Merrill, not Hawke. Though I gather from the subtext that he’s jealous of Merrill’s fairly obvious infatuation with Hawke. Despite the fact that he walked away from her in the first place. Which Varric went on about at length when the topic came up. I swear they have more issues than Varric’s entire collection of serials.
Donnic: All this between random acts of spider.
Aveline: Occasionally DURING random acts of spider.
Donnic: …I roasted a chicken. For dinner. And there’s warm water and soap over there. If you like, I can tell you about the latest barracks card game over dinner.
Aveline: …Have I mentioned lately that I love you?
This. All of this. ;D
*laughs* This is exactly what I meant. <3
Aveline and Donnic are adorable together uwuwuwu
I am making that conversation apart of my canon. It’s too adorable.
I am on the SP Donline.
All power is dangerous when abused.
Fortifying an organization with ‘righteous’ and ‘holy’ power through a corrupt institutionalized religion that is already abusing its powers and granting them control and sovereignty over another group of ‘evil’ people who were granted powers by birth because hey they might someday accidentally abuse those powers and hurt somebody all while making them more likely to abuse their powers and hurt somebody by excessively restricting and abusing them when all most of them really want is to live out their lives in peace?
No, that doesn’t sound like an abuse of power at all.
It’s only technically Chaos vs Order because the current laws are bunk and things are so ridiculously corrupt and unbalanced. You want actual Chaos vs Order? How about fair, appropriate laws and punishments and guidelines and education for mages and an actual justice system that punishes the offenders and rogue mages instead of treating every mage that wants to use their powers for anything or live outside of life imprisonment a rogue mage?
People who feel appreciated and valued and that they are productive members of society generally don’t go on murderous rampages and probably aren’t going to make bargains with demons if they’re happy with their lives.
This is what the argument seems like, to me:
“If even one of them hurts one innocent person by abusing their powers, the cost is too great! We can’t take any risk of life!”
“But we can’t keep that from happening even by imprisoning them. All we do is kill them when it happens, and we’d probably be doing that anyway even if they weren’t locked up and restricted, and instead we’re just hurting a lot of people who haven’t done anything in the meanwhile.”
“But all mages will use blood magic and make deals with demons given half a chance!”
“Well we’re not giving them any reason NOT to right now. Maybe if they had lives and stood to lose by doing so—”
“BUT INNOCENT PEOPLE!”
“Innocent people are ALREADY being hu—”
“BUT INNOCENT PEOPLE!”
“What about beatings, rapes, annulments, Tranquility, and having your children taken away?”
“BUT INNOCENT PEOPLE!”
Repeat ad nauseum.
Education, monitoring, and regulation? Hell yes.
Completely by non-mages?
It needs to be mixed. They need to have input and say on their own treatment. The College of Magi was a farce. And there need to be punishments for abuse on both sides.
I do love your arguments. I shall save this for my reading later.
I have exactly zero comments to make about Fenders or this confession, but holy mother of all fucks I had to reblog the image.
First, who ever is behind this image is a god damn genius. May you make more.
Second, as for villainous Hawke I’ve read 3 stories that have one and one of them happens to be a favorite of mine, he was just so broken.
Then there is that story with villainous Hawke/Merrill. I won’t go into details that story has a lot of triggers.
I mean, one might question his methods and their overall effectiveness towards obtaining rights for mages, but he talks plenty about the Mage Underground and being a part of that. If you didn’t get the hint that he was doing stuff while Hawke wasn’t around, then idk maybe you need to play the game again and frackin’ pay attention?
Or did this not mean anything to you:
Pics or it didn’t hap—
This again, really? Why do the same six complaints keep getting posted over and over again? Where’s that list katiebour made? Which bullet point is this? I know it’s on there.
Joking aside, and apart from the BLEEDINGLY OBVIOUS THING HE DOES AT THE END OF THE GAME, he does plenty. Hawke just isn’t a part of most of it, for a lot of safety and trust reasons.
What does Anders do?
- He writes a manifesto about mages’ rights, and it’s implied that he distributes it. Spreading propaganda is one way to try and drum up popular support.
- He becomes a member of the Mage Underground, until the faction is destroyed and disbanded. He says the resistance force he’s helping and is part of has been responsible for the freedom of hundreds of mages.
- He runs a free clinic and refrains from attacking templars openly to try and set a good example. This is another way to drum up support.
- He tries to talk to prominent people in the city (like Hawke) and gain their support.
- He tries to get insider information and expose unethical plots (like Alrik’s) and bring them to the attention of the public. Showing examples of how the other side is treating you unfairly and why they’re wrong and exposing their unethical practices is another good way to get support for your cause.
- It’s implied that he talks to Meredith and/or Orsino and/or the Grand Cleric.
- He does a lot of reading, researching, and studying.
The Mage Underground (at least until it’s destroyed) probably takes up a lot of his time. Because of its extremely dangerous and illegal nature, Anders doesn’t clue Hawke in about much of it, and even when he does out of desperation, it’s very small amounts of necessary information. Therefore, the player and Hawke don’t know many details. But it’s hinted at.
But yeah, working for a pro-mage organization that is concentrated on infiltrating the Gallows and working from the inside out to both band together like-minded mages fighting for freedom and actually free some of the imprisoned mages locked up in the Gallows is totally doing nothing.
I mean, what else did you want him to do? Waltz into the Gallows with a petition? Hold picket signs and protest marches? Kill Meredith? Slaughter a bunch of templars? Set himself on fire and run around the Gallows? Go to Val Royeaux and hold the Divine hostage? Take over Kirkwall with an army of kittens? Start a tumblr blog?
None of those things would have done him any good, and he knew it. He tried persuasion and rhetoric and subterfuge for six years. People get angry and criticize him for not doing anything because he staved off drastic violent measures for six years and then get angry and criticize him for blowing up the Chantry.
Dude can’t win.
Sweets, this bullet point wasn’t even there. I think she should add it. Along with the one explaining that Anders is a human and not a cat and that he has one nose and two ears.
Lol. The rebuttal for this is right up there with the other two obvious traits of an Anders that you mentioned, GTH, but I will add the bullet point “Anders never does anything.”
And then I will laugh heartily.
I think I’ll start sending the first point around for meta tomorrow.
lol. I wasn’t aware there were people who hated Anders for doing nothing, considering the number of people hating on him for doing something.
Fun loving? Fancy free? Was he now? I am not so sure.
Bah. DON’T MAKE ME PULL OUT THE AUDIO CLIPS AGAIN. But seriously, all OP really needs to do is to play through Awakenings with a mean!Warden. Tell Anders that mages deserve to be locked up and surprise! You’ll find DA2 Anders right there. You just don’t see that side of him if you agree with everything he says.
Anders has always been bitter and angry.
Here’s the audio files, AGAIN.
Anders was betrayed by his faith- he went from being a “good little Andrastian” one day to a “sin in the eyes of the Maker” the next. He was betrayed by his father, a man who gladly threw him away once his mage powers were discovered. He was old enough to remember what freedom and a life outside the Tower was like, and when he ran away, simply wanting to be free, they dragged him back again, and again, and again. He was put into solitary confinement for a year.
THIS is what they did to him. This is what he was dealing with in Awakenings, what he was hiding behind that snarky exterior.
And then there’s these:
Could Anders’ claustrophobia possibly have anything to do with the year he spent locked in the Tower’s dungeons? I can’t find my Mage Origins photosets or I’d add some of the photos of Kinloch’s dungeons. But suffice it to say they are NOT pretty.
The side Anders showed you in Awakenings wasn’t all or even most of who he really was. It was just the side he chose to display. Dig a little deeper, play a mean!Warden, read his short story, and you begin to see the truth.
And I will casually reblog this.
Also casually reblogging….
ALSO casually reblogging.
Perhaps if the game had sold better they would not have cancelled the DLC
This screenshot is from an alpha version of the game.
I just agree with this confession so much…
