Wow, what is this, 18k? Storm, you apparently give the best prompts! XD
Sorry, it got totally crazy. Also I have no idea if there is any established canon in regard to Ferrenly, so I just went with my own thing entirely. But, wow, this was nice to do! :D
A prompt by stormdragon, about Bann Ferrenly and Anders, and how Anders supposedly saved the man. Thank you so much for the prompt, love, it was a joy! <3
There was a story to accompany every escape he had found, every escape he had endured. On dark days, bound and caged in the tower despite bonds that may be employed or may not, he found himself thinking that at least he had stories - a great deal of them, in fact. Too many, if he was honest. But maybe he could pare them down or censor them a bit, tell them to children he might have, or to friends.
He tried not to realize the impossibility of these day dreams. They were there to brighten the darkness, after all, not cement it.
But one time, in a tavern and in a future he could never have imagined, in a city far away and under the lead of a man who seemed content to never betray him - to actually protect him, to defend him and to hide him, to help him even before they knew one another - he found himself unwittingly, unbelievably living out that old fairytale, that ancient daydream.
Confession, the 1st fics I wrote that sorta had Anders abuse (technically he’s just tied up & imprisoned is that considered?) was of a society who consumed mage flesh & blood in hopes of gaining magic. The 2nd, a dude who experiments on mages.
As long as it’s exciting/unique not a-typical like i stated “templar silences rapes ad leaves anders” stuff it’s fine
Hating on character limits.
Truth be told I came up with those (but never finished), mostly because I was getting a tad bit tired of the whole evil mage and templars. Most fics I find usually use one or both as the villains. (Not all just most. Which is fine and okay but if I keep eating my favorite food, I’ll eventually get tired of it. I need some variety every now and then.)
I think dragon age could have used some more named non-templar and non-mage villains. Also some more named non-human villains too. That’s how I am an equal opportunity dude. (the dude who experiments on mages. Might be a bit cliche now that I think about it. I-will-find-a-way-to-rid-you-of-your-magic-without-sacrificing-your-identy-sort-of-experiments.)
Sorry, I am babbling again. I’ll go back under my rock now. /ignoremeplease

Dragon Age Awakening Codex Entry - Seneschal Varel:
Varel has spent his life defending Amaranthine. When Rendon Howe was arl, Varel briefly became seneschal of Vigil’s Keep, but he repeatedly objected to Howe’s orders and was demoted to lower and lower ranks. Nonetheless, he continued to serve with defiance. When Howe’s acts turned more sinister, Varel secretly sheltered those in need and used what little power he had to counteract the Arl’s atrocities. Soon, Varel was languishing in the dungeon awaiting execution. But Howe died first.
When the Grey Wardens took over Amaranthine, the order reappointed Varel as seneschal. Although Varel is not a Warden himself, his position as administrator of the Warden’s lands makes him privy to many secrets of the order, including the Joining ritual. This rare honor is a testament to his character.
Not only did he stand up to Arl Howe, he continued to do so even when Howe retaliated against him by stripping him of his ranks.
But he wasn’t content to just voice his defiance, no.
He extended an arm and acted to help people in need, offering them shelter and protection with what tiny amounts of clout he had left, no doubt earned the hard way from people who respected him for his vigilance and honesty and fortitude.
Which landed him in the dungeon, awaiting execution.
He was willing to die to help other people. He gave up the ranks he spent his life earning in defense of Amaranthine to help other people, and he was willing to give his life.
But help came in the nick of time, and Howe got taken out, first.
He’s not a Grey Warden, but he runs their keep and knows their secrets.
He knows Grey Warden secrets.
In a world where the Wardens seem to adopt a Trust No One policy more often than not, unless it benefits them or is absolutely necessary, where members of the upper ruling class probably knew a few minor details… Varel knows Warden secrets, and is allowed to administer the Joining.
He’s tough. He’s fair. He’s kind. He’s strong. He has a heart of fucking diamond and a will to match and he will be goddamnedif anything will go down wrong on his watch if he can help it.
He doesn’t flee the keep when it’s under attack by Darkspawn, even though it lands him on the wrong end of a Darkspawn blade. Once more he’s willing to give his life for what he wants to protect. And he does it for you, as the Warden-Commander, too.
He leads you, guides you, helps you, and keeps a sense of humor about him the entire time.
Motherfucker will even take a crossbow bolt for you if you get careless and fuck up.
Plus the amazing perfume that thessalian of Scent of a Warden made for me based on him is fucking perfection in a bottle, just so you know. It’s like bearhugging a giant lovable sentient cedarwood that will protect you forever.
Why didn’t they just make him a Grey Warden? My personal headcanon? He was too valuable to risk losing, and he’d already proved himself. So he’s basically an honorary one, in spirit.
And he dies like one.
I know this dude. I loved this dude. I had look to see if there was a way to keep him alive after my first go at awakening.
